First steps

What counts as a plumbing emergency, and what to do first

A plumbing emergency is any problem that is damaging your home right now or making it unsafe to use. Water is the usual cause. A split pipe, a tank pouring onto the floor and a toilet that overflows with sewage all qualify, and each one gets worse by the minute.

Water you cannot stop

A burst pipe, a failed supply line or a gusher under a sink. Close the main valve first, then call. Our burst pipe repair work runs off the same 24/7 line.

A leaking or dead water heater

Water at the base of a tank often means the tank itself has failed. A tank that only runs cold may need a part, which is the call between repair and replacement.

Sewage or a backed-up drain

Wastewater rising in a floor drain or tub, or several fixtures gurgling at once, points to a blocked line. A plumber can start with drain cleaning and a camera if the clog keeps returning.

The first five minutes matter more than anything a plumber does later. These four steps limit damage while you wait.

  1. Stop the water

Close the main shutoff where the line enters the building. The MDC suggests testing it ahead of time by closing it and checking that faucets run dry.

  2. Mind the electricity

If water reaches outlets, appliances or the panel, switch off the breaker only if you can reach it from dry floor. Otherwise stay clear and say so on the call.

  3. Protect what you can

Lift rugs, boxes and electronics out of the wet area. Photograph the damage before cleanup, because your insurer will ask.

  4. Call the 24/7 line

Tell us what you see, where the shutoff is and whether anyone has smelled gas. We dispatch a plumber from there.

Dispatch

How dispatch works from Bloomfield

Bloomfield Express Plumbing is a dispatch line for licensed and insured plumbers, listed at 1404 Blue Hills Avenue, Bloomfield, CT 06002. That is a business address on an industrial stretch of Route 187, not a shop, so please do not drive there. Plumbers come to you. The line is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. You describe the problem by phone, and we send a plumber to your address when one is available.

We do not promise an arrival time. Traffic, weather and other emergencies change the schedule, and an honest answer beats a made-up one. What we do promise is a clear price before work starts and a same-day appointment whenever the schedule allows.

  1. You call and describe the problem, the room and the location of the shutoff.
  2. We confirm the address and ask about gas smells, standing water and electrical hazards.
  3. A plumber is dispatched, and you hear the price before any work begins.
  4. The plumber fixes the problem or makes it safe, then tells you what still needs attention.

Routine jobs use the same number. A dripping faucet or a slow drain can wait for a daytime visit, so ask for a same-day appointment and have the details from our contact page ready.

Bloomfield facts

What the MDC and the Building Division mean for your repair

Bloomfield is one of eight Connecticut municipalities served by the Metropolitan District Commission, known as the MDC. The MDC supplies the water, which the MDC describes as soft, at roughly 1 grain per gallon of hardness, and it provides most of the town's sewer service.

Septic systems still exist in parts of town, and the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District reviews septic plans. For a water or sewer emergency in the street, its Command Center takes calls at (860) 278-7850, press 1. Call it when you suspect the trouble is outside your property line.

Storms put the sewer system under strain. The Clean Water Project reports more than 100 miles of MDC sewer pipe in Bloomfield, and about a quarter of it is over 50 years old. Rain can enter through cracked pipes, laterals, downspouts, sump pumps and yard drains, and storm backups into basements do happen. If a basement drain rises only during heavy rain, check with the MDC before you pay for repairs.

Who owns which pipe

The MDC maintains the main sewer. You own and maintain the lateral, the pipe from your house to that main. The MDC asks you to call before lateral work, and says it will not accept liability if you skip that step.

On the water side, the owner maintains the service pipe from the main to the building. The exception is an old pipe that breaks between the main and the meter pit or curb stop, which the MDC repairs or replaces at no charge. Ask the MDC where that point sits on your property before you assume a repair is yours or theirs.

Housing age shapes what we find. Bloomfield's town plan says about 52 percent of homes were built before 1970. Bloomfield Center has Colonial, Victorian and early 20th century houses, Wintonbury leans toward mid-century ranches and capes, and the Blue Hills area along Route 187 mixes single-family homes, townhouses and apartments. In a house that old, expect aging drain lines and supply piping, and ask the plumber what material they find.

Permits follow a similar logic. The Bloomfield Building Division enforces the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code, built on the 2021 International Plumbing Code (IPC). Clearing a clog and fixing a leak in a pipe, valve or fixture are permit-exempt when nothing is replaced or rearranged. Adding, altering, replacing or relocating supply or drain piping is not exempt.

In practice, a simple repair moves fast, while new pipe runs add permit and inspection steps. The division says most permits issue about 10 days after plans are submitted, so plan ahead for anything that is not urgent. Questions go to the Building Division at 860-769-3516.

Safety checklist for a plumbing emergency

Check these before the plumber arrives

Most of these take less than a minute and protect people before they protect property.

  • If you smell gas, leave the building and call Connecticut Natural Gas at 866-924-5325 or 911 before you call a plumber. Bloomfield's natural gas comes from Connecticut Natural Gas.
  • Keep children and pets out of any room with standing water or sewage.
  • Do not touch switches or appliances while standing in water.
  • Know where the main shutoff is and keep the path to it clear.
  • Avoid contact with sewage, and wash hands well if you touch it.
  • Do not run a dishwasher or washing machine during a backup.
  • Keep carbon monoxide alarms on every level, and have heating systems, flues and gas appliances inspected every year, as the Connecticut Department of Public Health advises.

We do not diagnose mold or health effects after a flood. Ask your doctor or the local health district about those. Our job is the pipe, the drain or the tank, and getting the water under control.
