What an enzyme cleaner actually does
These products carry enzymes or bacteria that feed on organic matter such as food residue, hair oils and soap film. The process is slow. Labels usually ask you to pour a dose at night and leave it sitting for hours without running water. That is a very different job from the one a snake or a water jet does.
A blockage made of a hair mat, a wad of paper towel or a toy is not food for bacteria. Enzymes will not break those down. Think of the product as a mild cleaning habit, much like wiping a counter, and not as a repair.
Enzymes against the usual alternatives
| Method | Best use | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Enzyme or bacteria cleaner | Slow monthly upkeep on a kitchen or bathroom line | Too slow for a standing clog and does nothing for solid objects |
| Strong acid or lye opener | Marketed for fast results | Harsh on skin, eyes and some pipe materials, and risky if it fails and sits in the pipe |
| Boiling water | Light grease film in a metal or hard-plastic drain | Pours too little heat to move a real blockage, and can soften some plastic fittings |
| Hand plunger or small hand snake | Clog near the fixture | Can push a deep clog farther down the line |
| Professional cable or hydro-jetting | Repeat clogs or full backups | Needs a visit and the right equipment |
The EPA advises septic owners to avoid strong acid and alkali drain cleaners. It suggests boiling water or a snake instead. The EPA also says additive products, enzymes included, are generally unnecessary for septic tanks because the tank already hosts the microbes it needs.
A quick test: is your drain slow or stopped?
Slow but draining
Water leaves the sink within a minute or two. A monthly enzyme dose and a drain-strainer habit are reasonable here.
Slow in one fixture only
The blockage is in that fixture's trap or branch. Try a plunger or a hand snake before anything liquid.
Slow in several fixtures
A shared line is restricted. A cleaner will not reach the cause, so move to a plumber's cable or water jet.
Gurgling, odor or backup
Air and waste are fighting for room. Stop adding water and treat it as a main line problem.
Using an enzyme cleaner the right way
Clear what you can first
Lift out the stopper and pull hair or soap wads by hand. Enzymes work only on what is left after the obvious debris is gone.
Follow the label dose
More product does not work faster. Measure the dose, pour it directly into the drain and not onto the sink surface.
Leave the drain at rest
Keep water out of that fixture for the time on the label, often overnight. A running tap rinses the product before it can work.
Flush with warm water in the morning
Run warm water, not scalding, for a couple of minutes. If the sink still holds water, stop and call.
When a standing clog needs a plumber
A fixture that will not drain at all, a toilet that overflows, or water backing into a tub when you run the washer are signs of a deeper restriction. Pouring more product into a full drain also makes the water dangerous to handle, since it now carries chemicals.
Call a plumber if you notice any of these
Skip the second bottle when one of these is true.
- Water sits in the sink, tub or floor drain for more than a few minutes.
- More than one fixture is slow or gurgling at the same time.
- A basement drain smells of sewage or bubbles when the washer drains.
- Clogs return within days of being cleared.
- You used a strong chemical opener that did not work. Do not mix products.
- Wastewater is coming up through a floor drain or a toilet.
Drain backing up into the house right now?
Stop running water and stay out of the wet area. Our 24/7 line is open, and we offer same-day appointments when available. Call before you add more cleaner.
What a professional does that a bottle cannot
A plumber's cable cuts through hair and roots and pulls debris out of the line. A hydro jetter blasts the pipe wall clean with pressurized water, which removes grease that cables tend to leave behind. A drain camera shows what is left and where the line has failed.
Our drain cleaning visits start with the simplest tool that will solve the problem. When grease or scale has built up along the whole run, hydro jetting cleans the pipe wall instead of just punching a hole through the blockage.
Bloomfield, CT: what MDC customers should know
The MDC's sewer ordinance bars substances that damage sewer materials through chemical action. It also bars anything with a pH below 5.5 or above 10.0, along with flammables and solvents. For you, that means the harsh openers sold at hardware stores are a poor choice if the rinse water reaches an MDC sewer.
The MDC names grease as the usual cause of blockages and tells residents to keep cooking oil and fat out of drains. Its household guidance does not mention enzyme products at all, and we found no statement from the MDC or the EPA that enzymes clear a clog in a municipal line. Treat them as upkeep only.
If a sewer backup happens, the MDC advises you to stop using fixtures, avoid contact with the water and disinfect afterward. Then call the Command Center at 860-278-7850, press 1, since the problem may sit in the lateral or the main.
Habits that cut down on blockages
- Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel and put small amounts of fat in the trash.
- Fit a mesh strainer over the shower and tub drains, and empty it after each use.
- Keep wipes, floss, paper towels and cat litter out of toilets, a list the EPA gives for septic users.
- Flush only toilet paper, as the EPA advises for any system.
- Rinse dishes only after scraping them, so food and fat go to the trash and not the drain.
Nearby towns, different sewer systems
West Hartford is an MDC member town, so the same grease and chemical rules apply there. Avon runs its own public sewer through the town's Engineering department, and the MDC is not the provider. A plumber working in Avon will point you to the town for sewer questions.
If your home is on septic, EPA guidelines say enzyme and bacteria additives are generally unnecessary because the tank already hosts the microbes it needs. The agency points owners to boiling water or a snake instead of chemical openers.
If the bottle did not help, Call (860) 397-8103 and tell us what the drain is doing.
Enzyme drain cleaner questions
Almost never. The products work slowly on organic film and are meant for upkeep. A fully blocked drain needs a plunger, a snake or a professional cable or jet.
The EPA says additives are generally unnecessary because the tank already hosts the microbes it needs. If your Bloomfield home is on septic, ask the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District about the system serving your address.

Yes. Our line runs 24/7. Stop adding water, stay out of any wet area and call. If sewage is backing up, the MDC Command Center is at 860-278-7850, press 1.
Yes. The MDC says not to wash grease down with hot water and soap. Wipe the pan with a paper towel first, then bag small amounts of fat and put them in the trash.
Follow the label. Many call for a dose every few weeks. If you need one more often than that to keep a drain moving, something else is wrong.
